Everything we learned about Resident Evil Veronica from Summer Game Fest

Third-person only, plays more like RE2 remake, and more.

Despite Resident Evil Veronica coming out next year, the only gameplay available at Summer Game Fest’s ‘Play Days’ event was the exact reveal trailer we all saw kicking off Summer Game Fest’s showcase. You know, the one where Claire visits Chris’ dump of an apartment in France, then runs into a suspiciously HUNK-like Umbrella operative.

However, Capcom did hold a brief Q&A session with Veronica producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi for a select group of journalists. So I’ve gathered all of the details revealed from that below, plus the official press release from Capcom, to give you the clearest picture yet of what the Code: Veronica remake is all about.

Credit to Nintendo Wire, Eurogamer, VGC, Polygon, PlayStation Blog, and IGN for their Q&A details. All quotes are attributed to Veronica producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi.

Here’s everything we learned about Resident Evil Veronica from Summer Game Fest 2026:

  • It “reimagines” the original Code: Veronica storyline.
    • “The original Code: Veronica was released in the year 2000, so since the year 2000, of course, there have been many entries in the Resident Evil series, and the history of the world, the lore, and the story of Resident Evil have proportionally increased.”
    • “So, as you might have noticed in other remake titles, when we do revisit those older titles, we do kind of retune some things, so that there’s more continuity and there’s more of a connection to the overall lore of the universe that’s been established. So that’s true for other entries, and that’s going to be true for this one as well.”
  • Developed by team members who worked on the Resident Evil 2 and 4 remakes.
  • It uses Capcom’s RE ENGINE.
  • Releases in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam.
  • Veronica is only playable in third-person, with no way to change your POV to first-person, like in Requiem.
  • Claire won’t play the same as Leon in RE4 and Requiem, leaning more towards her RE2 remake style.
    • “It’s going to be very much inline with the game feel of Resident Evil 2 remake.”
    • “You could probably imagine something like a mashup of RE2 game mechanics.”
  • The remake dropped the ‘Code’ from its name, as “each remake is as vital and important as a numbered Resident Evil entry”, so the awkward naming was dropped to “communicate that to our audience”.
  • Hirabayashi wouldn’t confirm whether that was HUNK in the reveal trailer, encouraging fans to guess who it was instead. (This fan is guessing that yes, the character who looks and sounds identical to HUNK, is indeed HUNK. But this is Resident Evil. I guess that could be Clone #121 of HUNK instead.)
  • I don’t think his inclusion was ever really in question, considering how important he is to the plot of the original Code: Veronica, but Steve Burnside’s return was basically confirmed.
    • “Let’s say hypothetically that he is in the game…. Like we do in every remake title, we’re always looking for ways to dig deeper into characters to give them more dimension. That goes for Claire, and might include Steve. We’ll have to wait and see.”
  • Who makes the final call when some devs want to stick with original ideas, versus those that want something new? “It’s the director who makes the decision.”

Lastly, when asked about how the remake will handle the themes surrounding villain Alfred Ashford, Hirabayashi responded that “our intention and goal with the remake is to deliver a horror experience and also explore those characters deeper and look into even more dimensionality for them as well.”

And that “we are analyzing the character on a slightly deeper level, trying to ask ourselves, what are the reasons that’s driving this character? What is their motivation? What is driving their personality? So that’s what we’re looking at, and then from there we decided how we can portray that? We’re making it so those portrayals aren’t finalized yet.”

That’s it for what we learned at this year’s Summer Game Fest, but we’ll continue to report on any new information for Resident Evil Veronica as we wait for its 2027 release. Here’s some pictures of the remake in action until then.
