Final Fantasy Resonance adapts the story of axed gacha Brave Exvius

Out October 22 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch/Switch 2, and PC.

Rare is the gacha that gets an offline mode once it ends service, but rarer still is a full blown adaptation as a dedicated single-player, physical game release. But that’s exactly what Final Fantasy Resonance is: a brand new HD-2D RPG in the Final Fantasy universe that’s using Final Fantasy Brave Exvius’ story as a “narrative foundation”. Specifically, it’s adapting the story of Season 1. Final Fantasy Resonance was announced at Nintendo’s June 9 2026 Direct showcase.

Thanks to a preview from IGN, we know that almost everything else is new in Final Fantasy Resonance, like the combat system and overworld, but some elements of Brave Exvius remain. Such as its soundtrack, and summoning Visions in combat (famous characters from other Final Fantasy games).

Resonance is the first HD-2D game in the Final Fantasy series, and it takes 30 to 40 hours to complete, or 60 to 80 hours if you’re a completionist. Considerably less time than it took to see all five Seasons of Brave Exvius, such is the way gacha narratives are dished out in patches—and Brave Exvius had 10 years worth of patches, launching October 22, 2015 in Japan and reaching end of service on October 31, 2025. The Global version didn’t even get to experience the final few chapters before it went offline a year earlier on October 30, 2024.

If you’re a Final Fantasy fan worried that a mobile game’s story isn’t up to par with the series’ usual high standards—I wouldn’t worry too much. While I never played it myself, fans of Brave Exvius have always been very passionate about the game’s surprisingly good narrative.

Final Fantasy Resonance is co-developed by Square Enix and Lancarse, and releases this year on October 22 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch/Switch 2, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store. The standard edition costs $49.99 / £49.99 / €59.99, the digital deluxe edition costs $59.99 / £54.99 / €69.99, and the collector’s edition will set you back $209.99 / £189.99 / €219.99‎.

I gotta say, as a Final Fantasy and HD-2D art style fan, and having heard so much about how people love Brave Exvius’ story, I’m really looking for to checking out Final Fantasy Resonance.
